چکیده

THE-studies of the toxic effects of fluoride on the human system have evoked a very lively interest throughout the world because the public health programmes of fluoridation for the prevention of dental caries have always considered the risk of a remote cumulative intoxication. However, the indices of early intoxication are very poorly defined. The affinity of fluoride for the bones is acknowledged by everybody, but there is no universal agreement on its effects on other systems of the body-particularly when it has been spread over a number of years. We have had a unique opportunity of studying the toxic potentialities of this ion because there exists an extensive belt of 'endemic fluorosis' in the southern parts of Punjab (India) mainly affecting the rural population. As already reported, people in these villages get their drinking water supply mostly from wells in which the fluorine content is high (varying from 2.5 to I4 parts per million-Singh, Jolly and Bansal, I96I; Singh and Jolly, I96I). The soil of this area is sandy and the temperature goes pretty high (iI6°-II7° F.) in the summer. The skeletal and neurological features of endemic fluorosis have already been described (Singh, Jolly and Bansal, I96I; Singh and Jolly, I96I; Singh, Dass, Hayreh and Jolly, I96I). The bones, due to heavy and irregular fluoride deposition, become grotesque and markedly irregular in their contours (Figs. i and 2). The

A comparative study of fluoride ingestion levels, serum thyroid hormone & TSH level derangements, dental fluorosis status among school children from endemic and non-endemic fluorosis areas

The study was undertaken to determine serum/urinary fluoride status and comparison of free T4, free T3 and thyroid stimulating hormone levels of 8 to 15 years old children with and without dental fluorosis living in an endemic and non-endemic fluorosis area. A sample group of 60 male and female school children, with or without dental fluorosis, consuming fluoride-contaminated water in endemic f...

Skeletal Changes in Endemic Fluorosis

Endemic fluorosis is a chronic fluorine intoxication found in certain parts of the world where there is excessive fluorine in the water and soil. It affects the teeth and skeleton, and secondarily the nervous system (Siddiqui 1955; Jolly, Singh and Singh 1961; Singh, Jolly and Bansal 1961 ; Singh and Jolly 1961). The skeletal changes in experimental and industrial fluorosis are well recognised ...

The use of fluoride-containing toothpastes in young children: the scientific evidence for recommending a small quantity.

The prevalence of dental fluorosis has increased since the 1930s in both fluoridated and nonfluoridated United States communities because of increased exposure to systemic fluorides. 1-4 Although the increase in dental fluorosis is of the mild and very mild categories and poses no immediate health problem, more severe levels are of esthetic concern and may threaten the continued use of systemic...

Accuracy of the Simplified Thylstrup & Fejerskov Index in Rural Communities with Endemic Fluorosis

The aim of the present study was to compare the values of the Thylstrup & Fejerskov Index (TF index) for the determination of the prevalence of dental fluorosis using either all teeth (gold standard) or six upper anterior teeth (simplified TF index). The sample was made up of 396 individuals aged six to 22 years from three Brazilian cities with endemic fluorosis caused by the ingestion of water...

Factors Associated to Endemic Dental Fluorosis in Brazilian Rural Communities

The present paper examines the relationship between hydrochemical characteristics and endemic dental fluorosis, controlling for variables with information on an individual level. An epidemiological survey was carried out in seven rural communities in two municipalities in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Thystrup & Fejerskov index was employed by a single examiner for the diagnosis of den...
